When it comes to areas like stairs, hallways, and landings, your carpet needs to do more than just look good, it needs to withstand daily wear and tear. These high-traffic zones see some of the heaviest footfall in your home, so choosing the right carpet is crucial for both longevity and style.
At Mr H Carpets, we help customers across Southampton, Portsmouth and the South Coast find flooring that lasts, and still looks fantastic years later. Here’s what to consider when selecting a carpet for busy spaces.
1. Choose a Durable Carpet Material
The material you choose has a big impact on how well your carpet holds up:
Nylon: Extremely durable and resilient, ideal for stairs and hallways. It's also stain-resistant and easy to clean.
Polypropylene: Budget-friendly and stain-resistant, but slightly less crush-resistant than nylon.
Wool: A luxury option that's naturally durable and insulating, but may require more maintenance. Wool blends (e.g. 80/20) offer a balance of strength and comfort.
Tip: Ask about wool-mix loop pile, they’re tough and bounce back well from pressure.
2. Opt for a Low-Pile or Loop Carpet
Carpet pile height affects how it looks and wears over time.
Low pile (short, dense fibres) is best for high-traffic areas. It resists matting and holds its shape.
Loop pile carpets, such as Berber or cord loop, are very durable and excellent at hiding footprints and dirt.
Avoid deep-pile or shag carpets in stairways, they flatten quickly and show wear more easily.
3. Consider Carpet Density & Weight
A dense carpet means more fibres per square inch, making it more resistant to crushing.
Ask us to show you carpets with high stitch rates and a heavy backing.
A denser carpet will often feel firmer underfoot, and that's a good thing for busy hallways.
4. Think About Stair Safety
Safety is just as important as style:
Choose a carpet with good grip to prevent slips.
Avoid very smooth or silky finishes.
A professional fitting (like ours!) ensures your stair carpet is secure and tight with no loose edges.
5. Pick a Practical Colour or Pattern
Light colours may show dirt faster, consider mid-tone neutrals, charcoal greys, or flecked designs that mask dirt and wear.
Patterns (stripes, textures) help disguise traffic lines and add interest to long hallways.
Consider a contrasting border or runner on stairs for a premium, tailored look.
Don’t Forget About Underlay
A good quality underlay can:
Increase comfort and support
Extend the life of your carpet
Improve heat and sound insulation
We always recommend denser underlay for stairs and halls—it makes a huge difference!
